After what seemed like the shortest summer break ever, I returned to Twerton Park this evening for Bath City’s first game of the 2010/11 campaign… OK, a pre-season friendly against Cardiff City.
According to the BBC website, Cardiff have a few financial problems. In fact, I am sure I spotted some of their players selling copies of The Big Issue on Twerton High Street, although that could have just been a Michael Chopra lookalike.
Cardiff brought a strong side, albeit short of a few quid. Given the team they faced, I feel Bath City conducted themselves very well and avoided embarrassment, “only” losing 2-0.
I was surprised by the massive police presence. At first I thought there had been a sighting of Raoul Moat in Twerton Chippy. Apparently certain members of the Cardiff City Fan Club, or whatever they’re called, have been known to use a few naughty words and steal other kids’ dinner money, which probably explains why the whole cast of The Bill were out in numbers… Somehow, I don’t think they were there to watch Bath City.
Best wishes to Cardiff next season – except when they play Leeds. Also, good luck in getting across the bridge – I hope you can afford it. I’ve never understood why you need to pay to get into Wales, yet it’s free to enter England.

Leeds promoted on the Saturday. Bath City promoted on the Sunday.
Anyone who thinks it must have been fun, clearly isn't a football fan. One of the most stressful weekends of my life!
