This evening I went to Twerton Park to watch the Bath City kids play the Cirencester Town children in the FA Youth Cup. Tempted by the cheap admission fee, and with the hope of verbally abusing encouraging a sporting minor, Simon came along, bringing his girlfriend.
The game was poor. There can’t have been any more than 100 spectators, and to be honest, the players weren’t very good tonight. Maybe I have been spoilt by the wonders of the Arsenal youth academy, but I cannot see one member of Bath’s youth setup breaking into the senior side – a shame, as in the previous youth match I watched, there was some promising talent.
The game was played on a typical autumnal evening, so yes, it was cold. Even with 3 layers of clothing and a scarf, I started to shiver towards the end of the game.
The referee was terrible (and I’ve seen some bad refs at Twerton). Cirencester kicked Bath off the park, yet the referee offered no protection to City’s players. I sat down on the cold, empty terraces, shivering, while Simon berated the official in a manner which would make Neil Warnock look like Buddha.
One thing I did notice – the ref bared many similarities to Chelsea manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari. Maybe it was indeed Luiz, who, while holidaying in Bath during the international break, decided to referee a youth cup match. Who knows?
The game ended 2-0 to Cirencester.
Oh, and Leeds also lost 4-2 to Rotherham this evening; although it was only in the Johnston’s Paint Brush Trophy, so nobody really gives a shit.
