Yesterday, I had the pleasure to witness one of the greatest games of football I have ever seen – Chelmsford City against Bath City.
We left Bath at 10am; making the long, 4-hour journey to Essex. Bath City had recently lost 3-1 and weren’t having the best of starts to the season. Chelmsford, in sharp contrast, were sitting pretty at the top of the league.
Things didn’t start well – Chelmsford scored early. It was a case of a lot of City supporters thinking “here we go…”
Then we were awarded a penalty. We rejoiced. But the penalty was missed! As the ball was scrambled away, it met the feet of winger, Richard Evans, who slammed it into the goal. 1-1!
The second half kicked off. Then I saw something I have never seen before. City stampeded their way towards Chelmsford’s keeper, scoring a cracker of a goal which shocked the home faithful and caused the travelling fans to celebrate as if they had won the league.
It got better… before the reality of the early goal kicked in, City scored again. 3-1! True ecstasy.
Then disaster struck. With over 20 minutes to go, Chelmsford were awarded a penalty. There were no misses this time and the penalty was scored.
The moment of horror continued when Bath City’s keeper, Paul Evans, took offense to a Chelmsford player and decided to give him ‘a little punch’. Evo saw red. City were down to 10 men and were forced to stick a midfield player in goal.
That was it! City had blown it. Not only were they not going to win, but they would lose. Or so I thought…
City battled and battled against a wave of attack from table-topping Chelmsford. It was a valiant effort. Every City fan had their hearts in their mouth, while nearby paramedics prepared the defibrillators. When it was announced there was to be five minutes of injury time, I think one or two fans had to make use of the resuscitators.
Bath City held out and conquered Chelmsford. They had won 3-2. A fantastic result and one I will never forget.
