Bath City 2-1 Rushden & Diamonds
Our first win in the National Conference
Fantastic result. Still buzzing. It’s going to be hard getting to sleep tonight!
This evening was the closest I have every come to being a tramp.
No, I didn’t give up my IT job to start selling copies of The Big Issue…
On the way home from work, I popped into the local shops to buy a pack of Thatcher’s Gold Cider.
Immediately after paying, a homeless man approached the cashier and paid for his own cans of cider. Sure, mine was a quality cider made from apples in Somerset, while his was super strength paint-stripper made from robot tears in a car garage; but the principal was that we both bought cider. For shame.

When Bath City won promotion to the National Conference back in May, I didn’t expect our first game of the new campaign to be played in a Southern League quality ground in front of just 328 people. I guess that’s what you have to expect when your first away game is against Hayes & Yeading United.
I know Bath City’s own attendances leaves a lot to be desired, but that is what you get when you are based in a town that’s primary sport involves an egg-shaped ball. I am not sure what other activities are on offer in Hayes. Having walked through the place two years ago, I would assume smashing bottles and graffiti are popular past times.
Still, the grounds can only get better. Hopefully, as the season progresses, the weather will also improve. It pissed it down today. I would like to think (and certainly hope) we will get better results, having lost 2-1. However, the lads cannot be faulted for their effort – having a ball cleared off the line, a penalty denied and a free kick which hit the bar. Lady Luck is a cow and was not on our side today.
The journey hope was quick and stress free. My tea was bought from a service station – a meal “deal” consisting of a BLT sandwich, a packet of crisps and a bag of Maltesers – all for £3.99 – not your typical motorway services daylight robbery, more a case of petty theft on their part. I was back in my flat shortly after 7pm. When we play Gateshead in February, I won’t even be halfway home at that time!
Tomorrow afternoon, Bath City start a new season in a new league – the National Conference, or as the corporate fat cats are calling it, The Blue Square Bet Premier… quiet a mouthful – I prefer the former.
I will, of course, be attending the opening game, which is against an old enemy from past seasons, Hayes & Yeading United. Even in the lower divisions, this was one of my least favoured trips, so going there again is something of an anticlimax to the start of the season.
Hopefully we can something we haven’t done before and actually beat Hayes & Yeading. It would also be nice to not emulate the previous two opening-day fixtures and concede four goals!
Time for bed now – I have an early start, but if you consider I’ll be travelling to Gateshead in a few months, this weekend’s game is almost a local derby.
