Pity then that tomorrow I’m going a few miles up the road from the famous seaside resort to Fleetwood. Yet another day in Bath City’s Conference journey.
A crude chant, commonly used at football grounds by supporters to wind up their rival fans, usually after a team has surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw or lose the match.
This chant was heard at Bath City’s two most recent games, although the emotions I experienced during both instances were somewhat different.
The first was heard at approximately 4.55pm on Saturday at Twerton Park. Just two minutes earlier, Bath City were losing 2-0 to Darlington and deep into injury time. With fans heading for the pub and the referee getting ready to collect his envelope from the Pakistan Cricket Board (allegedly), it appeared to be all but over for City. That is until Lewis Hogg and Hector Mackie scored two goals between them in as many minutes. Cue mass delirium, joyous scenes and of course, the customary “2-0 and you f**ked it up”. It felt great.
In sharp contrast, last night it felt shit. City were away to Tamworth, who are doing very well in the league. Prior to the game, I was expecting a defeat and had a draw been offered to me by the Tamworth manager, I would have cut off his hand with a rusty breadknife and eaten it.
Despite being away to strong opposition, when you find yourself 2-0 up, you like to think you can go on and win the game. Alas, despite a valiant effort by the Bath City players, it wasn’t to be and as the Tamworth striker ran off to celebrate his equalising goal, with the scoreline reading 2-2, I was brought back crashing to earth by 900 Brummies chanting the all too familiar “2-0 and you f**ked it up”.
Please sit back in awe at my blog’s new design.
I’ll put the finishing touches to it and make a blog entry tomorrow when I am off work.
Right now, I am getting ready to leave for Tamworth to watch Bath City.
When Bath City beat Woking in the Play Off Final in May and got promoted to the National Conference, I knew some teams in the new league would give us a real beating.
Up until this weekend, City have more or less matched most teams, picking up a handful of draws, a win and what defeats were suffered, were all closely matched affairs.
AFC Wimbledon were different. Top of the league, strong team, a fantastic fanbase and cash in the bank. I had no complaints over the 4-0 defeat. Sometimes you just have to admit, you were beaten by the better team.
Despite getting thrashed, the trip to Wimbledon was still a great day out. A fantastic club and one I hope finishes the season as champions.
